You have the unique opportunity to have someone hand painted into the piece.  When you order, send an email to barry@naniken.com with a photograph of the person you want added.    It is important that he can see all of the person in the photograph.  Barry will then paint the people requested into the crowd.  Please note that Barry reserves the right to not paint in anything he thinks doesn't fit with the scene.

This vibrant and compelling piece creates a sense of celebration by presenting the viewer with a raised, uplifting and inspiring moment of beauty and tranquillity amidst the ordinary hustle of people leaving Mass and filling the Enniskillen streets.

The use of watercolour is particularly effective in conveying a sense of fluidity and lightness. The splatters and blends of colours in the sky depict the sunrise, with dynamic hues of orange, pink, Lenten purple and blue that evoke strong emotions and a sense of wonder.

The perspective is drawn from an elevated vantage point, looking down on the bustling street and architectural structures. This angle gives a comprehensive view of the scene and adds a dramatic depth from with the centre of the Rose Window and the brightest part of the sky. St Michael the Archangel draws the eye down to the second focal point where the figures populating the street provide a lively human element that animates the scene.

The people in the scene are from the range of cultures and backgrounds and ages that makes the community what it is. The viewer is then drawn up through the town through the main streets and out into town and wider countryside. In the distance is Topped Mountain where generations of people have gathered to watch the rising Easter sun.

The vertical elements of the church steeples guide the viewer's gaze upwards, further emphasizing the aspirational and uplifting mood of the piece. The detailing in the architecture is meticulous, with the artist capturing the essence of French Neo-Gothic and Victorian architectural styles through precise line work and subtle shading. Each building is individualized and has its own colour yet contributes to a coherent overall scene.

The inclusion of doves flying high in the sky symbolise peace, freedom, the Holy Spirit and human aspiration towards higher ideals. The lower one in particular draws the two churches together in this celebration. Hidden in this piece there are three scenes from inside St. Michaels representing St. Molaise, The Holy Trinity window and the Nativity.

There is also a nod to the Charles Russell, Sermon on the Mount mural depicting locals whose names now belong with the mists of time. This was the point of inspiration to include over seventy parishioners and others who are recognisable as Barry captured them in this anniversary week, March 2025.

The commission originated when Monsignor Peter met Barry, the artist, sadly to organise his mother Maria’s funeral just before Christmas 2024. A rapport was built as they looked at the paintings in Barry’s house and discussed art and the anniversary. In the piece Barry’s mother Maria is again with her husband Tony, her brother Seamus and her parents Bartle and Kathleen. A little hark to previous generations who had St. Michael’s as their spiritual home.

We will make a donation to St Michael's Parish Enniskillen for each piece sold.
