'Making it Home' Magpie Lino print - Sinéad Woods

Making it Home is a hand-printed linocut inspired by the magpies building their nest in the silver birch tree in Sinéad’s front garden—a tree she planted herself. Watching the magpies construct their nest in early spring brought a special sense of connection to nature right outside her door. She loved capturing the delicate white space of the tree branches as they framed a vibrant sunset sky, creating a perfect setting for this little habitat. The magpies cleverly worked while the tree was still in bud, weaving small branches into a nest that, despite looking exposed at first, soon found shelter beneath the leaf cover.

This piece is printed with two lino blocks: one for the bold black lines and another reduction block for the layered oranges in the sky. Using Cranfield oil inks on Fabriano paper, Sinéad carefully carves away more of the reduction block with each layer, building depth and warmth in the sunset background. Each print in this edition carries the subtle uniqueness that comes with hand printing, making every piece a one-of-a-kind artwork.
