The Clocktower, St. Anne's Park - Barry McAdam

“On a early autumn afternoon when at the market in St. Anne's Park I went for a walk over by the tower.  The gate was open and I walked in.  Although I have spent many years walking around the park I had never been inside the garden and as soon as I saw it I knew this was the angle I wanted to paint.  The planting in front of the tower provided me with a range of complementary colours and shapes and grounded the tower in nature.  I enjoyed the opportunity to paint a piece with such a big 'slap' of red in the centre against the delicate greens and blue of the sky.  This is something that I know from experience shouldn't work unless done well. 

Thankfully I achieved the balance in the final piece.  This was done by painting at half speed, a gentle build up to the strong colours so that I could get braver as I went along.”
