Lord Charlemont came back from his Grand Tour of Italy and Greece and added this 'Little House' to his estate in 1775.  I walked from Donnycarney over to the Casio and decided to paint this piece for my Dublin collection.

This piece is done in acrylic with a strong underpainting.  This is a technique where a base colour goes on the canvas and then the other colours are painted on top leaving elements of the colour coming through to complement and enhance the painting.  A golden rich yellow was chosen as the base and you can see it coming through in many places.  This colour complements beautifully the blues and greys in the stone.  It also led to me choosing to come up with the strong colour elements so that I could give the impression of strong daylight and sunset at the same time.  I wanted to capture the way it looks on a bright day as one stands outside and also in a summers evening time as one may have approached for a party back in the 1700s.  I can only imagine the surprise when a visitor realises that the structure that looks like a single room is all illusion, however, as it actually contains 16 rooms on three floors.

The perspective from the temple is replicated throughout the piece and in the grass especially as a nod to the wonderful geometric shapes that adorn the inside of the Casino Marino.
